Belgium - Antwerp Gateway

Overview

Antwerp is the second largest port in Europe and enjoys the benefits of excellent multi-modal connections to all major European centres of consumption and production. The port is located in the Scheldt-Maas-Rhine delta, connecting it not only to the 1,500km Belgian network of inland waterways but also to the European network. Barge transport now forms a significant part of the chain of transport with around one third of Antwerp's container volumes already being carried by barge. Barge transport is for example being encouraged by modernizing the Albert canal between Antwerp and Liege to make it possible for large pusher convoys to navigate along its entire length. DP World manages the Antwerp Gateway terminal in partnership with CMACGM, Zim Line, Cosco Pacific & the port of Duisburg. The common user terminal occupies a favourable position on the River Scheldt, before the lock system, resulting in a four-hour gain compared to berthing alongside the inner docks. DP World also has a shareholding in the growing logistics centre that is being developed in Liege.

The terminal is continuing its expansion in anticipation of growing business and the ever increasing size of vessels demanding more efficient and speedier turnarounds. Antwerp Gateway, with its automated stacking cranes in the yard, is generating unrivalled productivity for its customers. This together with the excellent hinterland connections is winning more business from surrounding ports in the Benelux area.
