Community
|
Community engagement is key to healthy and motivated workforce, and strong relationships with a range of local stakeholders. While the mix of projects varies from terminal to terminal, DP World supports implementation of community-facing projects according to the following four themes:
Developing Port CommunitiesProjects in this category seek to strengthen ties between ports and port communities; this is done through projects that revitalise public spaces and build awareness of the function and role of ports in the local economy. In one case, we renovated a public plaza near one of our terminals, including refurbishing a fountain, adding public lighting and new walkways. In another, we created a ‘Quayside Duty Free’, that created opportunities for local vendors to supply vessel crews with a variety of locally-made goods.
Building Health InfrastructureGood health is fundamental to the human ability to realise its potential, in any field. In many of our host countries, a large fraction of the population has limited access to basic medical services and/or clean water. In a flagship effort, Djibouti DP World has partnered with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Family Health International (FHI) and the Government of Djibouti to develop “ROADS”, a network of hybrid clinics/rest stations along the Ethiopian-Djibouti Corridor. This project is expected to provide basic medical care to over 30,000 people per year in its first year of operation, and significantly more in subsequent years. DP World and its partners are currently working to expand ROADS to Mozambique and Senegal.

Investing in PeopleDP World supports projects that match skills with demand in port communities, and which deepen locals’ ability to contribute to the company’s growth. In Yemen, DP World Aden partnered with RMI to expand the Ras Morbat Vocational Training Centre, which offers residents of the port city of Aden 4-6 month apprenticeships in key skilled and semi-skilled trades, along with instruction in running small businesses. DP World Djibouti provided 16 Djibouti nationals to pursue a 4-year degree in maritime engineering and piloting at the Alexandria Maritime Academy in Egypt.

Road SafetyAnnually, 1.3 million people perish on the world’s roads, and 90% of these fatalities occur in developing countries. DP World’s business and global footprint puts the company in a favorable position to address this issue, which is gaining attention as a worldwide epidemic. Through the ‘ROADS’ programme described above, DP World expects to be able to monitor road conditions and build safety awareness in several African countries. In the UAE, DP World launched a Safe Driving campaign to coincide with the Holy Month of Ramadan, in order to build awareness of the hazards of driving under conditions of fatigue.
