Environment

As a top-tier terminal operator, DP World is in an excellent position to contribute to the preservation of coastal habitats, and to take a leading role in the mitigation of CO2 emissions industry-wide. Our global environmental projects are centred around the following three themes:

Clean Ports:

In 2009, we launched the first instalment of “Clean Ports” at DP World Djazair (Algeira), where we partnered with supplier KoneCranes and two local dive clubs to remove more than 100TEU (twenty-foot containers) of man-made waste from three recreational ports near the capital. We expect the “Clean Ports” programme to expanded to at least three more terminals by the end of 2011. As part of a plan to expand and deepen the initiative, DP World has recently partnered with the organisation PlasticFreeOcean to build awareness of the devastating impact of plastic refuse on the marine environment, and develop viable recycling solutions. Plastic is the number one killer of marine life worldwide, and contributes to a number of serious human health problems.

HabitatH20

Set up in 2009, HabitatH2O aims to protect fragile marine habitats, with particular emphasis on coral reefs and mangrove forests,  threatened by both pollution and climate change. The first project in this category is currently underway in Djibouti, where DP World has partnered with a local bottler and a marine dive association to perform baseline studies of the health of local reefs, and to lay tether buoys near the most popular dive sites. The programme will be expanded to other terminals in Africa and Asia in 2011. Notably, DP World’s London Gateway development won the 2010 Lloyd’s List Environmental Protection Award for its local conservation efforts, which have been widely cited as a model for marine terminals globally.

Addressing Climate Change

Climate change is widely recognised as one of the most critical environmental challenge facing the world today. DP World aims to reduce total CO2 emissions 27% over the next 5 years, in part through the use of energy-efficient and low CO2 emission technologies. Benefits include lower fuel costs, improvements in maintenance activities, cleaner exhaust emissions (and working environments) and a significant reduction in green house gases (GHG). ECO Rubber Tyre Gantry Cranes (RTG) have already been installed in Callao, Djibouti, Vancouver, Saigon, Jeddah and Senegal.
