Procurement represents one of the last frontiers for unlocking savings and reducing negative social and environmental externalities, while engaging vendors to create better relationships, and better value. Global companies like DP World, which purchase tens of millions of dollars in goods and services each year, have an obligation to set an example in ‘greening’ the supply chain.
In early 2010, DP World Procurement established a recognition scheme, the 3x3 Supplier Award, to inspire and encourage our principal suppliers to deliver a nominal 9% increase in value on DP World’s total yearly spend with that supplier, as measured by contributions to 1.) community support, 2.) waste reduction and 3.) cost-down innovation.
We actively encourage our global supplier to participate in our Sustainability programme as equal partners, participating in projects that are aligned with their own CSR initiatives or helping to create new ones. For example, global IT services provider Dimension Data (incidentally, the first recipient of the 3x3 award), has been working with us on vocational training initiatives in Yemen and Mozambique and a clean water program in Djibouti, while KoneCranes, a supplier of heavy lift equipment, partnered with us in Algeria to help run 'Clean Ports'.
